A 12-hour art exhibition like Paris’, Tokyo’s and Montreal’s White Night festivals will open this Friday, September 14 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Vazio S/A’s Carlos Teixeira is one of the participants with “Dead Garden”, a corridor that will relink the two (historically separated) venues of the show: downtown’s Municipal Park and the cultural center Palacio das Artes (see press release below).
White Night is the expression originated in Russia and the Nordic countries, and refers to the phenomenon of permanent twilight. Inspired by St Petersburg’s ‘White Nights’, where music and the arts keep the population entertained throughout the long summer evenings when the sun never sets, the term has been used in a series of events in various locations around the world to celebrate a night dedicated to the arts. The Brazilian edition features art direction by Paulo Pederneiras (Grupo Corpo dance company) .
“The Brazilian White Night is much more than a cultural event. It is a reinterpretation of the city’s downtown, within a content of density, so that the visitor can experience the space in a different way. The potential will unfold in countless playful experiences and new possibilities of meaning, ” says the director. For him, the fact that the day when the railings that separate the Municipal Park and the Palácio das Artes will be removed is a gesture that points to the beginning of a reintegration physically and symbolic: the cultural center inside the park, as envisioned in the original design by architect Oscar Niemeyer, the park inside the city, as we expect to see from this White Night on.
